What happens during sleep
Sleep is when the endocrine system does much of its work. Growth hormone release, cortisol regulation, testosterone production, and metabolic recovery all tie closely to sleep architecture and total time spent in restorative stages.
Disrupted or insufficient sleep affects each of these in measurable ways within days.
Quantity and quality both matter
Seven to nine hours is the general adult range, but consistency of timing, sleep latency, and time spent in deep and REM stages matter alongside total duration. A long night of fragmented sleep is not equivalent to a shorter, consolidated one.
What actually helps
Consistent wake times, morning light exposure, restraint with caffeine after midday, and a cool, dark sleeping environment cover most of the non-clinical territory. When sleep remains poor despite reasonable habits, a clinical evaluation is warranted.
